One of the ancient Greek myths tells about the combat between the young Theseus and the monster Minotaur, who lived in the Knossos labyrinth in Crete. Theseus were helped to get out of the labyrinth by a ball of thread presented to him by Ariadne. Labyrinths - architectural structures with complex corridors that were built in order to thrill the uninitiated - were by no means uncommon in the ancient world. Herodotus describes an Egyptian labyrinth with 3,000 rooms. A rather simple labyrinth is depicted on coins from Knossos; more complex patterns in the form of labyrinths are found in the drawings of Roman pavements and on the clothes of the ancient Roman emperors. The same patterns adorned the walls and floors of many cathedrals in continental Europe during the Middle Ages.

Nowadays, adults no longer deal with such puzzles, but there are two areas of science in which interest in labyrinths remains invariably high: psychology and computer design. Indeed, psychologists have been using labyrinths for decades to study the learned behavior of humans and animals. Even the simplest earthworm can be taught to wade through a maze in which the path forks in one place. After training, ants are able to overcome a maze with 10 branches.
